Build 106
- New Nature patterns: cherry blossoms, tropical leaves, ferns, daisies, sunflowers, bamboo, autumn leaves, ivy vines, grass, cactus and a wildflower meadow. 76 patterns in all.
Build 105
- 15 more ready-made patterns, 65 in all: ocean camo, pink camo, cheetah, tortoiseshell, peacock feathers, maze curves, mosaic tiles, basket weave, op-art waves, racing stripes, hex armor plates, candy corn, shamrocks, Easter eggs and fireworks.
Build 104
- The Patterns panel has a search box, and each type shows its first six with Show all for the rest.
- 12 more ready-made patterns, 50 in all: multi-terrain camo, dalmatian, dragon scales, houndstooth, argyle, herringbone, terrazzo, stained glass, paint splatter, neon grid, Halloween pumpkins and Christmas trees.
- Tidier Export: the Export button sits right under the file name, and format, paint depth and detail fold under Export settings, which shows the current values.
Earlier updates
Build 103
- 8 more ready-made Patterns, 38 in all: brick wall, tie-dye, rainbow stripes, circuit board, lightning, lava, winter snowflakes and stars and stripes.
Build 102
- 12 more ready-made Patterns, 30 in all: snow camo, tiger stripe camo, giraffe, cow print, snakeskin, polka dots, wood grain, topographic map, Damascus steel, hazard stripes, galaxy and Valentine's hearts.
Build 101
- Removed the grams-per-color estimate: it wasn't accurate enough. Your slicer shows the real filament use per color.
Build 100
- Send Goop a picture of my design when I export is now on by default, right under the Export button, so Goop can see what people make and fix what looks wrong. It's only ever a picture, never the model file. Add your @handle for credit if he features it, or untick it to stop (the tool remembers).
Build 99
- New Share a picture of my design with Goop option under Export. Off unless you tick it: when you export, a picture of your painted model (never the model file) goes to Goop with the colors and printer, plus your @handle if you'd like credit. Great ones may get featured.
Build 98
- Custom Full Spectrum mixes for the Snapmaker U1: under Filament & printer setup, set Mixes to Custom mixes that match the design. The tool keeps your 4 loaded filaments and, for each color in your design they can't hit on their own, finds the 2- or 3-filament mix that comes closest (like 70% yellow + 30% magenta), instead of only 50/50 blends.
- The 3MF carries the mixes for Snapmaker Orca and lists every recipe, so you can check them or enter them by hand.
- Copy link always includes the MatterHackers referral code.
Build 97
- Fit to my printer: when a design uses more colors than your printer takes, Fit to N colors shows which colors it would merge (the least used and closest), then does it in one click.
- 🎲 New layout on ready-made patterns: a fresh random camo, flames or splinter layout in the colors in your slots, so every part can be different.
- 🔗 Copy link shares a ready-made design: whoever opens the link gets the same pattern, colors and settings on their own model.
- Clean up logo cuts away a logo's background, flattens it to a few colors and smooths jagged edges, as a new image ready to wrap.
- Share can now save a before/after picture: plain print on one side, painted on the other.
- A Quick tour for first-time visitors (also under More), and anonymous counts of which features get used, to decide what to improve. Counts only: nothing about you or your files.
Build 96
- Creality K2 + CFS is no longer in the Printer list. Pick Any printer if you print on something that isn't listed.
Build 95
- Feedback can now include files to recreate a problem: tick Attach my model file or Attach my project (the model with its paint, photos and patterns), or add other files such as a full-size pattern image or a 3MF from your slicer. Up to 20 MB in all, sent only when you tick or add them.
Build 94
- New Printer picker above Filament slots: Bambu Lab with one or two AMS, Bambu Lab H2C, Snapmaker U1, Prusa XL or Prusa MMU3. The tool then keeps to the number of filaments your printer takes (slots, photo and pattern colors, AI's Max colors), warns if you go over, turns Snapmaker blends on or off to suit, and gives export tips for your slicer. Any printer keeps the full 16.
- 8 more ready-made Patterns, now sorted by type: dazzle camo, marble, checkered flag, flames, chevron stripes, a Halloween spider web, candy cane and holiday plaid.
Build 93
- Removed the print estimate under Export. It counted filament changes the way an AMS does them, which doesn't fit toolchanger printers like the Snapmaker U1 or Bambu Lab H2C, so your slicer is the place to check that.
- Quickstart below is refreshed for everything added in the last few builds.
Build 92
- New Patterns library next to Upload and Paste: woodland, desert, urban, digital and splinter camo, tiger, zebra, leopard, carbon fiber and honeycomb, all seamless and set up in real filament colors. One click puts it on the model.
- Buy these colors under Filament slots: direct MatterHackers product pages for your slots, or the closest color they carry.
- Presets in the pattern editor: save a design's size, wrap, placement and quality settings by name and put them on the next part in one click.
- Share (next to 3D full screen): save a branded picture or a 4-second spin video of your painted model, sized for Instagram.
- Feedback can now attach a picture of your 3D view and your settings, so problems are easier to fix.
- Tidier layout: rarely used settings (palettes, Snapmaker setup, filament library, white point and swatches, Direction) are folded away, Paint from photos only shows once a photo is aligned, and the 3D view stays in sight while you scroll.
Build 91
- New Preview in 3D in the pattern editor: see the design on the model exactly as Paint pattern will put it on, orbit round every side, change size, colors or Faces and watch it update, then go back to placing or paint.
- A warning now shows when parts of a design (thin lines, gaps, little stars) are too fine to print at the chosen size, with the size that keeps them.
- The Inside view shows inside surfaces striped, with a key, so they no longer look like pink paint.
Build 90
- Sides only is now a true side decal, exactly like the editor shows it: no more doubled or offset copies where the pattern used to be rolled over panels it thought were curved.
- Repeated logos read the right way round on the far side too, instead of mirrored (Placement › Readable on back).
- Narrow grooves and steps across a logo carry the design straight through instead of cutting a white line through it.
- Double-click no longer zooms out: it turns the view around the spot you clicked, at the same zoom. The ⌂ button still fits the whole model.
Build 89
- The pattern editor's settings no longer cover the model: Placement, Print quality and Edit design open one at a time, the bar never takes more than about half the view (it scrolls inside instead), and the open section folds away as soon as you drag the design.
- Patterns now come out like the editor shows them on big CAD parts: logos no longer get horizontal streaks, fans or missing wedges where a part is made of long thin triangles or a panel sits over a shell.
- New Faces option next to Wrap (Auto and Box): Sides only puts the design on like a decal from the side, as the editor shows it, carried over bevels, with the top, bottom and ends left the base color. One-color designs (logos) start on Sides only; All gives the top and ends their own copy too.
Build 88
- One-color designs (a black logo, a stencil) now paint straight away: no more "Use pattern colors first". If the design matches the base color, the base switches to white or black so it shows.
- New Base and Design color pickers right in the pattern bar: set T1 and the one-color design's filament there and see the preview change as you pick.
- Fixed: logos and designs with a clear background painted as smeared bands of the design color on parts with long CAD triangles (big blaster shells). The clear areas now stay the base color, so the design comes out crisp.
- Unfold keeps the pattern closer to true size: on the hardest parts we test against, stretched area dropped by about half (worst part 6.6% down to 3.4%).
Build 87
- Wrap is now right in the pattern editor's top row, next to Repeat, instead of hidden under Placement. Seam and Ends show up beside it when you pick Wrap around or Unfold.
- Ends now defaults to Flat, which kept the pattern at true size on every bar and boxy part we tested. Pick Fold over for the parcel look.
Build 86
- New Ends option for Wrap around and Unfold (next to Seam): Fold over folds the pattern in over the part's plain ends like a parcel (no edge, but it pinches toward the middle), Flat puts it on each end straight, at true size, with a clean edge where the end meets the sides.
Build 85
- Fixed big models (300,000+ triangles, like a full Lynx) crashing the tab at "Finding cut-off bits". Tidy cut-off bits now uses far less memory.
- More undo steps on big painted models: undo no longer throws away older steps early by overcounting their memory.
Build 84
- Unfold no longer adds extra seams: it now has exactly as few as Wrap around, while still cutting pattern stretch 3 to 25 times on real blaster parts.
- On simple bars and prisms, where Wrap around is already near true size, Unfold now keeps Wrap around's layout automatically.
Build 83
- New Wrap › Unfold (beta): starts from Wrap around, then flattens the whole outside of the part at once, the way game artists unwrap a model. The pattern keeps its true size and shape over steps, bosses and side walls instead of stretching, and stays where you placed it in the editor. Takes a few seconds longer on big models.
Build 82
- Fixed a Build 81 slip where Wrap around could leave the pattern off the front face of some parts.
Build 81
- Wrap around: where the seam on the far side stays open, each spot, blob or shape of the pattern now lands whole on one side of it instead of being sliced in half.
- Where the pattern closes all the way round, the small stretch that makes the repeats fit now eases in along the part instead of jumping where the part gets thicker.
Build 80
- Wrap around no longer creases along rounded edges. Fillets and the sides of a boss get the pattern rolled over them like the rest of the sides.
- Steps where a part gets thicker, and the round wall of a boss, carry the pattern on across the corner instead of streaking it.
Build 79
- Wrap around closes with no visible seam when the pattern fits, and a Seam option puts any seam on the far side.
- Ends of a wrapped part fold the pattern in neatly, and Box mode rolls it over curved faces.
- SpaceMouse: a swap option zooms with up/down and pans with forward/back.
Earlier
- SpaceMouse support in Chrome and Edge.
- Mirror tiles and Wrap around for patterns.
- Tidy cut-off bits cleans up tiny slivers of color at edges.
- Fixes for star and cow print patterns.
Tutorial
Quickstart
- Import model: 3MF, STL, OBJ, STEP, GLB or glTF.
- Add an image: Upload, Paste or Ctrl+V. PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP, GIF and SVG work. No image? The Patterns tab has dozens of ready-made patterns in real filament colors (camo, animal prints, textures, blaster looks, plants and holidays), with a search box to find one fast.
- Paint: click Paint from reference, or Wrap as pattern for patterns, logos and text.
- Check colors: each slot (T1, T2…) is a real filament. Click a swatch to change it. Pick your Printer above the slots and the tool keeps to the number of filaments it takes. Buy these colors links each one on MatterHackers.
- Export painted 3MF and open it in your slicer with File › Open.
Printing in color? It's set up for multicolor printers like the Snapmaker U1 and Bambu Lab H2C.
Wrap as pattern
- Drag to move, scroll or Size to resize, Rotate to turn.
- Base sets T1, the color under the design. A one-color design (a logo, a stencil) also gets Design to pick its filament.
- Preview in 3D shows the design on the model exactly as it will paint. Orbit round every side and change settings while it updates, then go back to placing or paint.
- Faces (Auto and Box): Sides only puts the design on like a decal from the side and leaves the top, bottom and ends the base color. One-color designs start here. All gives the top and ends their own copy too.
- Wrap: Auto handles flat-sided and round objects. Pick Box or Round to override. Wrap around rolls a repeat round long parts like wrapping paper, over rounded edges and bosses too, and folds it over the ends like a parcel. Seam › Auto fits a whole number of repeats round the part so the wrap closes with no seam. If that would stretch the design too much, the seam runs down the middle of the side facing away from you in the editor. Ends › Flat (default) puts it on each end straight, at true size, with a clean edge; Fold over folds it in over plain ends like a parcel. Wrap, Seam and Ends sit in the editor's top row. Unfold (beta) starts from Wrap around, then flattens the whole outside at once so the pattern keeps its true size over steps, bosses and odd shapes. It takes a few seconds longer.
- Seamless › Mirror tiles flips every other copy, so any image repeats with no visible tile seams.
- Direction (under Placement): Auto lays the design on from the model's thinnest side. Pick left/right, front/back or top/bottom to lay it on from there instead. Readable on back keeps a repeated logo the right way round on the far side.
- Repeat tiles the design; off places one copy.
- Side reach: raise it if copies overlap or get cut at rounded edges.
- Details: paint over vents and greebles, or keep them the base color.
- Halftone turns photos into printable dots. Thinnest line widens lines too thin to print.
- Tidy cut-off bits (on by default) cleans up the small fragments left where the design runs over an edge or a seam, so end faces and corners print cleaner with fewer color swaps. Whole shapes stay. More › Tidy cut-off bits runs it on paint that's already on the model.
- If parts of the design are too fine to print at your size (thin lines, small gaps, little stars), a warning shows the size that keeps them. Big, bold shapes print best and need fewer filament swaps.
- Presets save a design's size, wrap, faces, placement and quality settings by name, so the next part gets the same look in one click.
- Ready-made patterns get 🎲 New layout (a fresh random layout in the colors in your slots) and 🔗 Copy link, a link that puts the same design, colors and settings on anyone's model.
- Messy logo? Clean up logo (under the image) cuts the background away, flattens it to a few colors and smooths jagged edges, as a new image to wrap on.
Text, QR codes, Spotify codes, gradients
- Text: type, pick a font and colors, place it like a logo.
- QR code: type a link and place it. Keep each square at least 1.5 mm; the tool tells you the smallest size that will scan and adds Black or White filament if the colors are too close to read. Put codes on flat faces.
- Spotify code: paste an open.spotify.com link for a song, album, playlist or artist. Keep it at least 60 mm wide.
- Gradient: fade between two filaments in bands or dots.
- Paint by angle: separate colors for tops, sides and undersides.
Layers
- Every design you wrap on (pattern, logo, text, QR, Spotify) is its own layer. Use the eye to hide it, the arrows to reorder it, or delete it, and the paint under it comes back. Double-click a name to rename it.
- Painting by hand while you have layers goes into a Hand paint layer. Merge all flattens them; Undo brings them back.
Colors and palettes
- 230+ filament colors in sections, plus popular brands. Brand colors are close screen matches.
- Printer (above the slots): pick Bambu Lab with AMS, H2C, Snapmaker U1, Prusa XL or MMU3, and slots, photo and pattern colors and AI's Max colors stay within what it can load. If you go over, Fit to N colors merges the least-used, closest colors for you. You also get export tips for its slicer. Any printer allows 16.
- Color palettes set T1 to T4 in one click. Palettes, the filament library and Snapmaker setup sit under Filament & printer setup.
- Buy these colors lists a direct MatterHackers page for every slot, or the closest color they carry.
- Snapmaker color blends add 50/50 mixes for Snapmaker Orca's Full Spectrum: 4 filaments give 10 colors. Or set Mixes to Custom mixes that match the design: the tool keeps your loaded filaments and mixes 2 or 3 of them at the ratios closest to each color in your design (like 70% yellow + 30% magenta). Set up for Snapmaker U1 (see the U1) loads Snapmaker's cyan, magenta, yellow and white (or gray) filaments with blends on in one click.
Skip faces and models with their own colors
- Press S to skip faces: click, drag, Shift+drag a box or Ctrl+click a flat plane. Paint only these does the reverse.
- GLB, glTF and textured OBJ models: click Paint from model colors. No photo needed.
SpaceMouse
- Chrome or Edge: More › Connect SpaceMouse and pick your 3Dconnexion device. It reconnects by itself next time.
- Slide the cap left, right, up or down to pan. Push it forward to zoom in, pull back to zoom out.
- Twist to turn the model, tilt forward or back to look over or under it.
- Left button: fit the whole model in view. Right button: step through Side, Front, Top and ¾ views.
- Prefer pushing the cap down to zoom? More › SpaceMouse zoom swaps it, and forward/back then pans up and down.
- Your mouse keeps painting while the SpaceMouse moves the view. If nothing moves, close the 3Dconnexion software while you use the tool.
In your slicer
In Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer or Snapmaker Orca, use File › Open (not Import) so the 1 mm paint depth is kept, click Add in the color dialog, then slice. On a Bambu Lab H2C, its Vortek hotend swaps cut purge waste on color changes.
Handy
- Blaster in separate laid-flat STLs? Put it together in Blaster Assembler first. Its 3MF opens assembled here, and Lay parts flat for printing exports every part back flat with its paint.
- Save project keeps model, paint and images in one file to reopen later.
- Smooth previews the clean exported edges. Inside stripes inside surfaces (mating faces, channels) that stay T1.
- Share saves a branded picture, a before/after picture or a 4-second spin video of your model, sized for Instagram.
- When you export, the tool sends Goop a picture of your painted model (never the model file) so he can see what people make. Add your @handle under Export for credit if he features it, or untick Send Goop a picture of my design to stop.
- New here? More › Quick tour walks through the four main steps.
- Double-click the model to turn the view around that spot. The ⌂ button fits the whole model again.
- Full screen, Theme, Feedback and STEP import detail are under More in the top bar. In Wrap as pattern, extra settings are folded under Placement, Print quality and Edit design. Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo and redo. When you send feedback, leave the picture and settings attached, and tick Attach my model file or Attach my project for a bug so Goop can recreate it.
