Tech Breakdown: Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse
Introducing the Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse, The latest iteration in Lulzbot’s series of FFF 3D printers. Throughout this machine you find a variety of new hardware including updated features found on previous models, like the new toolhead, belted Z axis, and the Modular Heated Bed. There’s more to it that makes this machine a true workhorse, so let’s break it down.
Framing
As the Lulzbot TAZ family has evolved, so too has their construction. Some precision 3D printed parts can still be found throughout the frame, supporting the intricate parts of the motion system, but the structural components are all metal, from custom aluminum brackets and plates to the aluminum extrusion and sheet metal body. And gone are the leadscrews that used to drive the Z axis, they are instead replaced with a belt driven Z axis to eliminate Z banding. With a 3D printer this rigid, you can count on quality 3D prints.
Hotends and Heated Bed
In a departure from the mostly 3D printed toolheads of old, the Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse uses genuine E3D components for its extruder. With the new standard toolhead mounting system, you can swap toolheads across the entire lineup of Lulzbot 3D printers. The stock Lulzbot Aerostruder toolhead with its hardened steel hobbed gear and nozzle, can be replaced with any of their other toolheads, simply by undoing a couple screws, mounting the new toolhead, and flashing the firmware. The Modular Print Bed System is also a standard feature, allowing you to quickly swap between different build plates to increase uptime and give you the flexibility of printing on the PEI build surface for some material, and glass for others.
Old Features
The Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse still has features you are familiar with, like the auto bed leveling system to compensate for any tilt in the bed surface, and with the live baby stepping on the LCD, you can achieve the perfect first layer for all your 3D prints. And of course, you can still find all the quality settings and material profiles you know, along with some new ones, tailor-made to work with the Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse and whichever toolhead you have mounted.
From the company you know and love or are hearing about for the first time, the Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse is a fantastic next step in the Lulzbot TAZ lineup.
