Protopasta Magnetic Iron-filled Metal Composite PLA Filament
Real Iron-Filled PLA
Magnetic Iron PLA filament by Protopasta combines metal and plastic properties. This unique magnetic iron PLA filament contains real iron particles that give your 3D prints genuine magnetic properties and an authentic metal appearance. Create functional parts that attract magnets while achieving a professional cast-metal or weathered finish that can be polished or rusted for added realism.
Key Features of the Protopasta Magnetic Iron-filled Metal Composite PLA Filament:
- Contains real iron particles for authentic magnetic properties.
- Achieves a genuine metal finish that can be polished or weathered.
- Compatible with standard PLA printing settings and temperatures.
- Can be post-processed for rust effects or polished metal appearance.
Magnificent Magnetism
Unlike metal look-alike filaments, this iron-filled composite actually attracts magnets, opening up entirely new possibilities for functional 3D printing. Create magnetic closures, mounting systems, or interactive elements that work with real magnets. The ferromagnetic properties make it perfect for educational models, engineering prototypes, and creative projects that require genuine magnetic interaction.
- Works with neodymium and ferrite magnets.
- Ideal for functional prototypes, educational demonstrations, and interactive projects.
- Genuine iron content creates real magnetic attraction.
- Parts can be magnetized for permanent magnetic properties.
Easy PLA 3D Printing
Despite its metal content, this composite filament prints with the same ease and reliability as standard PLA. No specialized equipment or complex temperature profiles required - just load and print using your existing PLA settings. The consistent flow and minimal warping make it accessible to makers of all skill levels.
- Special settings are not needed! Standard PLA 3D print temperatures and settings will do.
- Excellent layer adhesion and shape retention.
- Compatible with all FDM 3D printers.
Wow Worthy Weathering
The real iron content gives 3D prints an authentic metallic appearance straight off the print bed. You can polish parts for a shiny metal look or intentionally rust them for an aged, weathered effect that looks completely realistic. Experience the unique ability to rust your 3D prints just like real iron. The high iron content allows for natural oxidation processes that create beautiful patinas and weathered finishes. Use salt water, vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide to accelerate rusting for industrial aesthetics, steampunk projects, or realistic prop making.
- Natural metallic appearance without painting, ideal for props, art pieces, and industrial designs.
- Multiple finishing techniques for varied effects.
- Can be polished to a bright metal shine.
- Develops authentic rust when exposed to moisture; the natural rusting process creates authentic patina.
How to Weather Your 3D Prints
Discover an enhanced rusting technique specifically designed for Magnetic Iron PLA 3D prints. This improved method delivers faster results and more authentic rust effects than traditional approaches, helping you achieve professional weathered finishes on your iron-filled 3D-printed projects.
What You'll Need:
- Safety First:
- Safety glasses and gloves
- A well-ventilated workspace
- A Proto-pasta Iron 3D Print
- Rusting solution: Hydrogen Peroxide, White vinegar, Salt
- Spray bottle, brush, or towel
- Optional:
- Wire brush
- Plastic bag
- Some sun or a heating duct
Instructions:
- In a well-ventilated area, and with your safety equipment on, mix the hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar.
- Next, mix in the salt until it's saturated.
- Optional: You can use a wire brush to expose more iron before proceeding to the next step.
- Spray, brush, or wrap your 3D print with the rust solution.
- Optional: Sealing your saturated 3D print in a plastic bag to retain moisture improves the rusting effect.
- Allow the 3D print to dry.
- Optional: Warming the solution, such as putting your saturated 3D print in sunlight, accelerates the chemical reaction.

Please Note:
- Magnets stick to prints made with Magnetic Iron PLA, but printed objects will not function as magnets.
- This material has been flow-optimized and has lower moisture uptake than standard PLAs. Keep mass flow up by using a larger nozzle with faster speeds and in a single direction (minimal retraction) to avoid heat soak.
