LAYERLOCK PEI BUILD PLATE
STRONG ADHESIONS FOR A SUPERIOR PRINTING EXPERIENCE
LayerLock Textured PEI Build Plate delivers consistently strong bed adhesion with various 3D printing materials. Succeeding with common filaments such as PLA, ABS, and PETG, and more, is easier with this strategically designed build plate.
Key Features of MatterHackers' LayerLock PEI Build Plate:
- Produces a beautiful textured or smooth first-layer print surface
- Boosts print adhesion to the bed surface for reliable printing
- Easy print removal with a flexible spring plate
- Double-sided surface extends plate usability
- Ideal for Printing PETG, PLA, and ABS Filaments*
- Compatible with PVA, TPU, ASA, Nylon (PA), and Polycarbonate (PC)*
*Please note that plate compatibility with these materials may not be the same as printer compatibility with the material. Consider external factors such as the machine's nozzle and heated bed temperature capabilities, its enclosure setup (if any), and active heating (if any).
SMOOTH PEI
SMOOTH SURFACE FOR PRECISE RESULTS
LayerLock Smooth PEI Plate delivers a flat, uniform surface that supports dimensionally consistent parts, especially in height-critical features. Select this surface for assemblies and close-fitting components where repeatable results and dependable fit matter most.
- Flat smooth surface allows for clean first-layer contact
- Achieve height consistency on dimension-critical features
- Ideal for tight-fit parts and precise assemblies
PRODUCE FINE-FINISH FIRST LAYERS
The matte PEI build surface of a LayerLock Smooth PEU Plate produces a sleek, uniform underside to prints. Achieve a polished first-layer finish that elevates the appearance of every print, from prototypes to display pieces, right off the bed.
- Uniform surface produces a smooth, clean first-layer
- Sleek underside finish enhances overall part appearance
- No cleanup required for the polished bottom surface
TEXTURED PEI
MORE TEXTURE FOR MORE ADHESION
LayerLock Textured PEI Plate combines a bold textured first-layer finish with reliable, high-grip adhesion. Its powder-coated surface strengthens the bond between the print and the bed while blending small first-layer variations into a uniform, tactile texture.
- Locks in first-layer adhesion for reliable print starts
- Creates a distinctive textured bottom finish on parts
- Boosts completion rates, saving time and filament
PART REMOVAL MADE QUICK AND SIMPLE
Spend more time printing and less time prying with LayerLock. Its removable magnetic spring-steel plate flexes to release parts. Prints often self-release as the PEI bed cools to ≤35°C, or pop free with a gentle bend for reliable long-term use.
- Prints often self-release as the bed cools to ≤35°C
- Magnetic removable plate for easy, tool-free removal
- PEI durably withstands temperature changes and repetitive flexing
WHICH LAYERLOCK PLATE IS RIGHT FOR ME?
| Smooth | Textured | |
| Ideal Use Case | ✓ Printing mainly PLA ✓ Desire a smooth first layer ✓ Precise dimensions are a must |
✓ Printing mostly materials that aren't PLA ✓ Desire a textured first layer ✓ Enhanced bed adhesion is a must |
| Compatible Materials |
✓ PLA ✓ ABS ✓ PETG ✓ TPU ✓ PC ✓ PA (Nylon) ✓ PVA ✓ Continuous Fiber variants |
✓ PLA ✓ ABS ✓ PETG ✓ TPU ✓ PC ✓ PA (Nylon) ✓ PVA ✓ Continuous Fiber variants |
| Note(s) | • May need bed adhesion solution for all compatible materials except PLA |
• May need bed adhesion solution for certain materials • Calibration sensitivity1 • Additional considerations may be needed for specific materials, depending on your printer setup2 |
1 A clean nozzle ensures that residuals on the nozzle do not decrease accuracy during calibration. Manually clean the tip if your printer does not already automatically clean it before calibration.
2 Depending on your printer setup and the material you’re printing, you may need to take additional steps. For example, on enclosed Bambu Lab printers, the upper glass cover should be removed when using textured plates with low-glass-transition-temperature filaments such as PLA, TPU, and PVA.
RECOMMENDED SETTINGS
Below are starting point recommendations. They may need to be adjusted due to external factors such as operating environment, printer model, filament requirements, and filament manufacturer. Other slicer settings may need to be adjusted as well, due to the previously mentioned factors.

*Optimal Z-height is highly recommended for this material. Printing too low may cause the material to fuse with the PEI surface material.
INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE OF LAYERLOCK PEI PLATE
INSTALLATION
- Align the LayerLock plate with the fixed points of your printer's platform.
- Lower the plate until it has securely attached to the magnetic platform.
- Calibrate Z-height and level your print bed before printing.
- It is recommended to recalibrate whenever you switch plates, and every few prints on the same plate, since first-layer calibration can drift over time and between surfaces. Also, recalibrate if you make significant changes to print settings such as speed, layer height, or temperatures, because these can change flow and first-layer results.
That's it! You're ready to print. For a more detailed walkthrough on "How to Succeed" with a powder-coated PEI plate (installing, printing, maintenance, or troubleshooting), check out our article here!
MAINTENANCE
- Clean the surface with water and detergent when dust/grease naturally builds up.
- IPA works too, but NOT acetone. This will damage the PEI.
- Accurate calibration is key to plate longevity.
- Some materials like PETG, RYNO, and TPU may fuse to the PEI if printed too low. Accurate Z-height calibration and bed leveling avoid this.
- Minor flexing of the plate should suffice for removing prints.
- Take precautions if resorting to a sharp scraper. This increases the risk of damaging the PEI.
- Some materials will easily come off after the plate has cooled (ex. PLA, ABS), while others may peel off more easily while the plate is still hot (ex. PETG, TPU, TPE). Do NOT touch the plate while hot—use heat-resistant gloves.
